"You'll Need This Later" is the critically-acclaimed debut release from composer/songwriter and drummer, Alvin Cobb, Jr., centered around a conversation with his younger self. Over the past 15 years, Alvin has been writing notes and leaving voice memos for himself, eventually gathering about a dozen of those diary entries and creating musical compositions/songs for each one. The album covers numerous topics including love, family, and a 2014 car accident that could have easily ended his music career. All of the music is performed by the Alvin Cobb, Jr. Trio, consisting of bassist/vocalist Katie Ernst and pianist Julius Tucker. They are joined by a few of Chicago's rising stars, such as Nola Adé, Nashon Holloway, Manasseh, Morgan Pirtle, and Aaron Day. The project has been featured on NPR, Worldwide FM, JazzFM UK, Rinse FM, AllAboutJazz, Vocalo, and made Bandcamp Weekly’s “Best Albums of 2024“ list.

With his first effort as a leader, Cobb has already started forging his own path. His style is unique and his work intimate. This makes You’ll Need This Later the auspicious start to his career.
